Cubs' Trading Martin Maldonado so Quickly Backfires in Wake of Willson Contreras Injury

When the Chicago Cubs dealt catcher Martin Maldonado to Houston before the trade deadline, the idea was to use their depth behind the plate and add depth in another area on their roster.

Well, that plan has backfired, as All-Star backstop Willson Contreras is back on the injured list with a hamstring strain.

Now that Contreras will miss at least a month with the hamstring injury, the Cubs will have to rely on backup Victor Caratini to handle the load. Of course, having Maldonado around would at least give Chicago a stable defensive presence behind the dish.

Even though he's not the All-Star he once was, the Cubs have to be hoping that Jonathan Lucroy doesn't accept an outright assignment to Triple-A from Los Angeles after being DFA'd a couple days ago.

Lucroy would fit perfectly on this team. It's either him or they need to convince David Ross to come out of retirement.
