Dak Prescott Has All the Leverage in Contract Negotiations With Cowboys Now
By Jerry Trotta
While Dak Prescott absolutely proved that he was deserving of a lucrative contract extension after a stellar showing in Week 1 against the New York Giants, it's understandable that the Dallas Cowboys front office didn't immediately pull the trigger.
However, they lost any potential leverage they had after the two-time Pro-Bowler picked apart the Washington Redskins secondary on Sunday.
After a first quarter interception, that bounced off the hands of Randall Cobb by the way, Dak completed all but three of his passes. He finished the game 26-of-30 for 269 yards to go with three touchdowns and an additional 60 yards on the ground.
Through two games, the Mississippi State product has completed a ridiculous 82.2% of his passes (51-of-62) for 674 passing yards and seven touchdowns while leading the Cowboys to a 2-0 record.
What makes those mind-blowing stats all the more impressive is that Dallas' offensive hasn't necessarily ran through Ezekiel Elliott. He's only got 36 attempts on the ground this year. So the notion that Dak is a product of Zeke's effectiveness on the ground should just be thrown out of the window. That narrative might have held legs in years past, but 2019 is an entirely different story.
Kellen Moore has the Cowboys running a pass-heavy offense and Prescott has done nothing but ball out.
Dak and the Cowboys have been deep in negotiations over a new contract for the last few months. It seemed they were close to getting a new deal done before the season and also after Week 1. But now that the Cowboys have waited, and Dak has gone off, he has all of the leverage and his new (likely record-breaking) contract will likely reflect that.
