Cowboys Should Be Sure Take CJ Henderson and Avoid Jaylon Johnson in the First Round of the Draft
By Jerry Trotta
As fun as it would be to see the Dallas Cowboys select an elite wide receiver with the No. 17 overall pick in the NFL Draft, the right move would be to address its secondary, which still has a gaping hole following the departure of cornerback Byron Jones in free agency.
The way we see it, the Cowboys should have the choice of selecting one of two CBs: Florida product CJ Henderson or Jaylon Johnson of Utah.
And Dallas had better be sure to choose the former in the first round.
Johnson is a nice prospect, and he feasted in the Pac-12 last season, buthis speed and flexibility (or lack thereof) should scare Cowboys fans. The former Ute is built like a brick, but he's often too reliant on his strength. Though Johnson would match up well against the bigger and brawnier receivers in the NFL, he'd surely make a habit out of getting burned by the smaller, more elusive pass catchers.
Henderson, who has the look of a protoypical lockdown guy, doesn't have that problem.
The likelihood is that Henderson has higher floor than Johnson. The former Gator was a running back in high school, so his agility should seamlessly translate to the NFL. His lanky arms bolster his elite coverage skills, which we believe are the second-best in the 2020 class behind only Ohio State stud Jeffrey Okudah.
So long as he continues to improve as a run defender, the First Team All-SEC selection will be a menace at the next level. He has plenty of suitors, but if he's there for Dallas to snatch at No. 17, the pick should be a no-brainer.
