Damian Lillard Claims He Thought He Was Headed to Knicks a Few Years Ago
By Tyler Kemp
For the last few years in Portland, star point guard Damian Lillard’s name has circulated throughout the NBA as a potential trade chip for the Blazers. Being that Portland has never been able to get over the hump, moving Lillard and getting the right haul in return could be enticing to management.
But do we ever remember any rumors linking him to the New York Knicks?! Lillard did an interview with Vanity Fair and talked about the NBA’s restart plan and how he would be chomping at the bit to play the Lakers in a potential playoff series, but then dropped this bomb on us.
The Knicks? Where did this come from? This has to be the first time anyone is hearing of this, right?
From New York’s perspective, there haven't been many players in recent memory outside of former Knick Kristaps Porzingis that would be worthy of being in a trade package for a perennial All-Star in Lillard. No wonder this never scratched the surface.
Also, notice how Dame, just like many stars in the past have, said that Madison Square Garden is his favorite place to play. NBA Twitter decided to give its own reasoning as to why the marquee players in the league all have the same answer.
It makes sense. Lillard is 6-2 in his NBA career in the Big Apple with an average of more than 22 points per game in those contests. With news of the previous trade rumor, all Knicks fans can do now is fantasize about the chance of a superstar almost coming to New York.
