Daniel Jones is Starting to Prove His Doubters Wrong After Brief But Impressive Preseason Debut
By Jerry Trotta
Yes, you read that headline correctly. And no, this isn't banter.
With all eyes on Daniel Jones in his opening drive for the New York Giants, the rookie quarterback shined. After replacing Eli Manning for the G-Men's second offensive possession, the widely scorned Duke product comfortably marched the Giants down the field.
DJ completed his first three passes against the Jets, and even hit wideout Bennie Fowler to impressively move the chains on a third-and-seven. On the following play, Jones found Fowler in the back corner of the end zone for his first career NFL touchdown.
The young signal-caller completed all five of his pass attempts for 67 yards and the aforementioned TD, translating to a stunning (and perfect) 158.3 passer rating. That's all the work that head coach Pat Shurmur asked of his rookie QB, subsequently replacing him with Alex Tanney following his lone drive.
Slowly but surely, Jones is beginning to serve up a fresh dish of crow for his deluge of doubters. Yes, five PA's is a minuscule sample size and he was doing battle against second-stringers, but the 22-year-old could NOT have played any better.
His haters and keyboard-huggers are going to do what cynics usually do: crawl back under their proverbial holes until he tosses a pick or takes an easily-avoidable sack.
For now at least, Jones has a profusion of individuals sitting on their couches with a TON of egg on their faces. Honestly, what more could he want from his professional debut?
