Darius Slay Calls Out Lions and NFL Over Players Being Cut Mid-Contract

When Darius Slay worked out a contract extension with the Detroit Lions back in 2016, it made him one of the richest cornerbacks in football. That hasn't stopped him from voicing his opinion on one of the biggest epidemics in football, though.

With two years remaining on his contract, Slay and the Lions will be discussing an extension, but the defensive back isn't happy with the state of contracts in the league.

Slay is right. There's something that just doesn't feel right about teams being able to cut players in the middle of contracts, which is why guaranteed money has become such a hot topic in contract discussions as of late. The biggest and most recent example is Jets running back Le'Veon Bell, who sat out an entire season because the Steelers weren't giving him the guaranteed money he wanted.

Of the $48 million that Slay earned in his most recent extension, $23 million, about half of it, was guaranteed. That put Slay in a pretty comfortable position, but others aren't as lucky when they put pen to paper. If a player gets cut mid-contract and they don't get a huge chunk of guaranteed money, it puts them in between a rock and a hard place - and it also gives NFL teams an easy out.

Frankly, I don't blame Slay one bit. It's not easy coming to work every day knowing that you could get the axe while the team faces little to no repercussions. He just wants a little bit more respect from NFL front offices.
