Darius Slay Rips Matt Patricia on Way Out of Detroit and Further Proves He's Among Worst Coaches in NFL
By Mark Powell
Darius Slay isn't happy with how his tenure in Detroit ended, and it's tough to blame him. The veteran CB waited months for a supposed contract extension that never came, and he was finally traded to the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday only after the Lions signed his replacement in Desmond Trufant.
While Slay did take the time to thank Lions fans and Detroit for his time in the Motor City, he burnt a bridge with Matt Patricia. Slay ripped the soon-to-be third-year Lions coach, citing a clear lack of respect and some comments that make Patricia's inability to relate to his players and put together a winning team all the more understandable.
Patricia has a record of 9-22-1 in his two seasons in Detroit, and is entering a critical third year at the helm. If the Lions don't improve, he could be on the way out along with GM Bob Quinn.
We don't know what goes on inside the Lions locker room, but the number of players who have reached out to Slay, including running back Kerryon Johnson, after his departure speaks to some level of camaraderie. Perhaps most concerning is Patricia's insistence that Slay doesn't work out with other elite cornerbacks, which doesn't make a semblance of sense, assuming it's true.
Slay's made three straight Pro Bowls. He's among the best in the NFL, hence the Eagles willingness to bring him aboard despite his public divorce with the Lions. For Patricia to make known his disagreement with a great player working out with other elite talents speaks to a rapidly-growing disconnect that will not end well for him should he not change course immediately.
