Eagles and Lions Reportedly Working on Darius Slay Trade That Would Include Contract Extension
By Mark Powell
The NFL is officially a players' league, joining the likes of the NBA where the Shield's finest drive the conversation.
Just hours after trying to jumpstart trade negotiations between the Detroit Lions and...well, pretty much anyone else, Darius Slay has reportedly gotten his wish.
Slay could be sent to the Philadelphia Eagles, but such a trade would constitute a contract extension as well, something the veteran has been after for months.
By allowing Slay to negotiate such an extension, it likely allows the Lions to increase the compensation they'll receive from Philly. As currently constructed, Slay is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2020 season. The Eagles, not surprisingly, would rather have a long-term deal in place for their potential lockdown corner before giving up substantial draft capital for him.
Slay, who has made three straight Pro Bowls and at just 28 years of age, has surely earned the financial incentive he desires. It sounds like the Eagles are willing to make that happen, while throwing the Lions a little something to secure his services.
Never a slow moment in the NFL offseason.
