Darius Slay Flat-Out Tells Lions to Trade Him Now After They Sign Desmond Trufant
By Scott Rogust
There has been no team more active in free agency than the Detroit Lions. General manager Bob Quinn and head coach Matt Patricia brought in plethora of ex-New England Patriots, but flipped the script on Wednesday by signing former Atlanta Falcons cornerback Desmond Trufant.
Considering the team has Trufant for the next two years to play alongside Justin Coleman, all signs point to the team parting ways with All-Pro corner Darius Slay. Well, fans and analysts didn't have to do Slay's work for him thanks to this blunt tweet.
The Lions don't have to fill in the blanks on this one.
Slay's displeasure in Detroit has been well-documented. He's entering the final year of his current deal, where he's set to make $12 million in 2020. Slay wants a new contract that makes him the highest paid at the position, but the Lions have shown they have no desire in doing so.
The Lions have placed Slay on the trading block since October, where they were looking for a premium return. Considering the team has the No. 3 overall pick in the draft, they have a good shot at replacing Slay with Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah, who will come at a cheaper price. And now they have Trufant, who had four interceptions this past season, despite missing seven games with a shoulder injury.
Slay has made it abundantly clear to the Lions front office: trade him immediately.
