Darren Collison Surprisingly Chooses Not to Return to NBA Despite Interest From Lakers and Clippers
By Karl Rasmussen
Former Indiana Pacers point guard Darren Collison shockingly retired from the NBA in the offseason in order to focus on his faith and family. Collison, a practicing Jehovah's Witness, explained via The Undefeated about the joy his faith brings to him, which is part of what led him to call it a career at age 31.
Rumors of his return have come up within NBA circles recently, and both the Lakers and Clippers had expressed interest in acquiring the 10-year veteran, wining and dining him in the past week. With the trade deadline now behind us, Collison was one of the more attractive names said to be available on the open market.
Unfortunately for fans in the City of Angels, Collison will not be returning to the NBA hardwood. At least, not this year.
Collison has reportedly informed interested organizations that the timing for an NBA return is not right, which could prove to be a big blow for the Lakers, who failed to make an acquisition at the trade deadline.
Last season with the Pacers, Collison started 76 games, scoring 11.2 points per game, alongside 6.0 assists and 1.4 steals. He also shot an impressive 40.7% from beyond the arc, making one 3 per game.
The veteran point guard would have been able to latch onto the bench of a contending team and compete to make his first ever NBA Finals. However, it seems he's resisted the call from Hollywood, and will indeed remain in retirement with his family for the time being.
