Darryl Strawberry Has Classy Response to Pete Alonso Breaking His Longstanding Mets Record
By Scott Rogust
Pete Alonso is the bright spot of the rather lowly 2019 campaign of the New York Mets. Going against the grain like in recent years, the Mets named the stud first baseman to their Opening Day roster, and he's been mashing home runs ever since.
On Sunday against the Chicago Cubs, Alonso hit his 27th longball of the season, the most ever by a Mets rookie before the All-Star break. Darryl Strawberry held that record since 1983, and sent out a classy message after Alonso's feat became official.
That is a glowing endorsement from a former Mets standout.
While Alonso has broken the franchise record, there are some bigger fish to fry. Mark McGwire holds the MLB record for most homers before the All-Star break with 33; New York has 12 games remaining before the Midsummer Classic, and Alonso potentially hitting 6 homers in that span is conceivable as a possibility.
Even if Alonso doesn't catch up to Big Mac, he has the opportunity to break the Mets' single-season home run record of 41, which is held jointly by Todd Hundley (1996) and Carlos Beltran (2006).
Even if he doesn't match these record-holders, Pete Alonso is providing the New York Mets fan base with hope for the future. And you can't put a price on hope.
