David Ortiz Recounts What if Felt Like to Be Shot and Details Long Recovery
By Jerry Trotta
Last weekend, David Ortiz made his first public appearance since being critically wounded by a gunshot in the Dominican Republic over the summer -- by throwing out the first pitch at Fenway Park ahead of a Red Sox clash against the Yankees.
Fast forward a few days later and Big Papi has opened up about the horrifying incident in an interview with Bob Hohler of the Boston Globe.
Describing the feeling upon being shot in the torso, the Red Sox legend said "I felt a burning sensation. I felt weird, like not myself, as I went down."
"People need to understand, this isn't a movie where you get shot in the street and you're back two minutes later," Ortiz continued. "No, I got shot and almost died. I only have one life to live. I can't just go to the pharmacy and buy another one."
The former World Series MVP even disclosed that he lost 40 pounds while recovering after his surgeries as he was only capable to eat melted ice chips and Jell-0. He couldn't even stomach soft fruits.
"I had nightmares all the time about being in the desert, looking for water," Ortiz added. "I would wake up with my mouth dry and feeling like I'm going to die."
We honestly don't even know what to say other than the fact that we are just so grateful and thankful that Ortiz is alive and progressing smoothly in his recovery.
Stay strong, Big Papi.
