DeAndre Hopkins Trade Proves Texans Were Begging for Disaster by Not Hiring a General Manager
By Evan Wolff
Even when Bill O'Brien was first announced as both the head coach and general manager of the Texans back in January, people were already skeptical of the decision by the organization's ownership. Having a head coach with GM powers is always a risky bet, and O'Brien's blunder of a trade on Monday is all the proof fans need.
Moving DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals for a running back and some draft capital was a huge whiff from the Texans, and will only further the belief from fans that the team needs separation between the GM and head coaching roles.
The fact that this trade even seemed remotely acceptable to O'Brien screams a level of incompetency that is almost incomprehensible. Why on earth would you trade away Deshaun Watson's favorite target, with no assets to replace him with? Now, the Texans' top receiving threat is the oft-injured Will Fuller.
Unfortunately, this is what happen when you give someone in sports this power, and they have absolutely no clue how to use it. O'Brien has massively screwed this up, and has created such a ripple with one trade that even JJ Watt felt compelled to comment on the reported trade.
Now O'Brien has to deal with the possibility of his franchise quarterback wanting out of this mess, and risking the Texans starting from scratch. This problem would have never surfaced if the Texans hired a competent GM, instead of caving to the demands of a head coach who clearly boasts too much control.
