Depleted and Awful Eagles WR Corps Deserves Blame for Brutal Loss to Lions

The Philadelphia Eagles came into Sunday's clash against the Detroit Lions missing some key pass catchers, but nobody truly expected that narrative to hold significant value in terms of the game's outcome.

Alshon Jeffrey and DeSean Jackson left Week 2 with injuries, but Carson Wentz was still able to make do with the likes of Nelson Agholor and Zach Ertz leading the charge in that contest, even though Philly ultimately lost to the Falcons on SNF.

However, Sunday was an entirely different story. The Eagles' depleted receiving corps dropped SEVEN passes versus Detroit, including a potential game-winner, in their 27-24 loss at home to the Lions.

Agholor managed to haul in two touchdowns, but the USC product also committed two drops and a costly fumble. Ertz, Dallas Goedert, Mack Hollins, and Jordan Howard also registered their own drops.

It's quite apparent that if those passes were reeled in, this is a different contest. Promising drives would not have abruptly halted, and Wentz could've subsequently led the Eagles to a scoring drive. Who's to say he doesn't?

Despite all of that, Philly had a PRIME chance to win the game. With less than a minute to play, following a field goal block to keep home alive, Wentz threw a deep ball to JJ Arcega-Whiteside near Detroit's end zone. However, the pigskin bounced off the rookie's hands and fell hopelessly to the turf.

If Whiteside reeled in the pass, he might have just scored. Even if he didn't find paydirt, the Eagles would've had more than enough time to run a few more plays.

The drop gave the ball back to Matthew Stafford and Co., who subsequently lined up in victory formation to clinch the win.

This loss is not on Wentz. He did his job. Had his receivers done theirs, Philly probably would have walked away with a dub. Instead, they are 1-2 and two games off the pace of undefeated Cowboys in the NFC East.
