Derek Dietrich Calls Out Keone Kela After Pirates-Reds Brawl
By Ryan Giglio
Tension between the Cincinnati Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates has been building since April's brawl.
On Tuesday night, the teams took their beef to an entire different level in what's been called the fight of the year.
While punches were thrown, tackles were made and words were exchanged on the field, players continued to talk after the game through the media.
Reds infielder Derek Dietrich called out Pirates pitcher Keone Kela, who threw a pitch near Dietrich's head during the game. Dietrich referenced Kela recently being suspended by the Pirates when talking to reporters after the game.
Dietrich may have a point with that comment. Kela had issues when he was a Texas Ranger, including being sent to Triple-A at the end of Spring Training in 2017. Players reportedly supported the Rangers' decision after Kela turned in a lackluster effort and unprofessional outing during a back-field B game. Kela was also described as a "clubhouse cancer."
It's notable that the pitching needy Rangers shipped Kela to Pittsburgh at last year's trade deadline and that now the Pirates are reportedly talking to the division rival Milwaukee Brewers regarding Kela.
These two teams have had bad blood all season, and Major League Baseball has not really done anything about it. While videos of brawls go viral on social media and bring attention to the league, hopefully a serious injury doesn't have to occur before someone finally steps in.
