By Jerry Trotta
One could truly ramble on for hours about the signature moments of Derek Jeter's Hall of Fame career. From his impossible catch while diving into the stands at Yankee Stadium against the Red Sox in 2013 to his countless hits in the clutch, there really is no shortage of highlights to dive into. Well, in honor of him being voted into Cooperstown's hallowed halls, The Captain delivered the sweetest of treats to baseball fans everywhere by breaking down his iconic flip play from the 2001 ALDS with MLB Network.
Talk about waxing poetic to the fullest extent possible. If you need us, we'll be watching this clip on loop for the next 24 hours.
The play, of course, ended up altering the entire dynamic of that ALDS against Oakland. The Yanks were down 2-0 in a best-of-five series entering that pivotal Game 3, and wound up winning the contest 1-0 thanks to Jeter's improbable defensive heroics. The Bronx Bombers fed off that energy and managed to swipe the final two tilts of the series to advance to the ALCS and eventually the World Series.
The rest is history.
The fact that THIS much mental analysis went into a split-second decision is a perfect testament to the imprint that Jeter left on the game. He was everything you could ask for in a player, and so much more.
