VIDEO: Derrick Jones Jr. Explains Why He Knew Aaron Gordon Wasn't Getting a 50 on His Tacko Fall Dunk
Derrick Jones Jr. controversially won the NBA's Slam Dunk contest on Saturday night, defeating Orlando Magic star Aaron Gordon, who jumped over the 7-5 Tacko Fall in spectacular fashion. While people may have expected a tie in the championship round, nobody expected Jones to flat-out win the contest then, which he captured by a score of 48-47. However, Jones wasn't surprised -- he knew exactly why Aaron Gordon did not get a 50 on his final dunk over the large Fall.
This makes perfect sense. Gordon's dunk may have been incredibly impressive, but when Tacko Fall's head was bent down by Gordon landing on him, the dunk became a lot less aesthetically pleasing than if he had fully cleared Fall. Therefore, the judges could not give him a perfect 50.
It turns out, though, that Gordon's dunk was supposed to end up as a 48, the same number given to Jones for his dunk, so that there would be another round. Due to a mistake by the judging panel, Gordon ended up with one fewer vote than Jones, costing him a chance to win the contest, effectively robbing him of the trophy.
While Gordon had an incredible dunk, and the judges made a mistake with their voting, it is hard to say that Jones did not deserve the crown, as his dunks were unbelievable as well.
