It looks as if the Mets' bullpen is no longer the only thing to have blown up this season. Manager Mickey Callaway and starting pitcher Jason Vargas were part of a heated, profane scene after Sunday's loss to the Cubs involving a clubhouse reporter. Callaway totally lost his cool, cursing out the journalist and letting things get tense to the point that Vargas threatened to beat the guy up.

This is all of a peice: Callaway's status with the Mets was already questionable, but this latest stain needs to put an end to his tenure as manager.

Vargas was apparently sticking up for Callaway when he threatened to punch the reporter -- later identified as Newsday's Tim Healey -- and although players are naturally going to stick up for their skippers, we can all think of about a million scenarios that could exemplify that dedication in a more professional manner.

As for Callaway, he continues to find new reasons for general manager Brodie Van Wagenen to fire him, yet miraculously he still remains the Mets manager. The incident prompted a statement from the organization, one that enumerates that there will be an internal review of the altercation.

There must be disciplinary actions taken by the Mets, and their first measure of enforcement should be to rid themselves of the problem that is their manager. At this point, it's almost as if he's trying to get himself sacked.

Evidently, the dysfunction extends beyond the diamond, and the source of so much of the disorder is Callaway. This latest episode should be his last wearing the blue and orange.
