Devin Funchess Out for Season as Injury Fails to Heal Properly
By Michael Luciano
The Indianapolis Colts anticipated that they would get a big red zone target back for their last-season run, but it looks like Devin Funchess won't be seeing the gridiron again this season.
Funchess fractured his collarbone early in the campaign, but the more optimistic minds in the Colts' building thought he could return to action before the Dec. 4 deadline to be taken off Injured Reserve. Instead, Funchess' injury hasn't healed as quickly as they anticipated, and he'll be out for the rest of the year.
Funchess, a former tight end/wide receiver hybrid at Michigan, was picked in the second round of the 2015 Draft by the Carolina Panthers. Funchess caught 63 balls for 840 yards and eight touchdowns during the Panthers' Super Bowl season, but the 6-4, 225-pound receiver's lack of speed led to inconsistent seperation. Eventually, Funchess bolted for Frank Reich and Indianapolis.
Funchess played in just one game this season, Indy's season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers, catching three passes for 32 yards.
Funchess is still just 25 years old, but he now faces a major uphill climb to rebuild his reputation within the NFL after his last two seasons have been either disappointing or injury-riddled.
