McCourty Twins Make Good Point About Jarrett Stidham Replacing Tom Brady But it Probably Doesn't Matter
By Jerry Trotta
As things currently stand, there hasn't been much evidence to suggest this narrative will change. The New England Patriots are planning to roll with Jarrett Stidham as their starting quarterback in 2020.
While virtually every NFL analyst and fan realizes how preposterous that sounds, the 2019 fourth-round pick out of Auburn appears to have the backing of a pair of Patriots veterans.
Following Tom Brady's departure, Devin and Jason McCourty voiced a vote of confidence for Stidham on the latest episode of their "Double Coverage" podcast, and their reasoning wasn't implausible.
"I think, to me, the best thing for Stiddy was he had to go against our defense every week. He didn’t have it easy," Devin said of the young QB. "To me, there were weeks he was just on point, and those were some of our best weeks as a defense mainly because Stiddy ate us up in practice leading up to the game, and I think put more pressure on us. So, I really just admire how hard he works."
There's definitely something to be said about Stidham facing the league's best defense every day in practice, but we're still talking about practice. Even if there's some value in their claims, we can't just take what the McCourty brothers say and just assume it will translate to an actual NFL game, of course.
Further, do we really think that Bill Belichick thinks Stidham gives New England the best chance to win? Even if the six-time Super Bowl champ values the youngster's future, it's highly unlikely that Stidham does much winning in 2020 if he ends up being the starter.
The McCourty twins wouldn't spew outright nonsense about Stidham's potential just to please Patriots fans. But as much as we applaud their optimism, it's not going to matter much in the big picture.
