Diamondbacks Reportedly Sign Free Agent Catcher Stephen Vogt
By Mark Powell
The Arizona Diamondbacks have addressed a need at catcher, bringing in a reliable veteran fresh off a major comeback season in San Francisco.
The Giants took a flyer on Stephen Vogt last season, and it paid dividends for the 35-year-old, who is now cashing in after his successful prove-it campaign.
Vogt expressed a desire to compete for a World Series entering free agency. While it's not clear he'll do that in Arizona, it does make sense he wouldn't take a discount to come back to San Francisco, despite growing up a Giants fan. With Bruce Bochy leaving the dugout, San Francisco could very well enter a rebuild phase despite their success in the 2010's.
“I want to go somewhere where I have the opportunity to win a World Series,” Vogt said in an interview with MLB Network Radio. “That’s something that I’ve always wanted to do. I’m really looking forward to hopefully having opportunities to do that.”
In Arizona, he'll be joining a club in transition. After trading Zack Greinke to the Astros at the deadline, Arizona admittedly took a step back, but are reloading to perhaps surprise some people and contend in an NL West which has been dominated by the Dodgers in recent years.
Vogt hit .263 with 10 home runs and 40 RBIs last season.
