Dion Waiters' Edible Situation Gets Murkier as Heat Hand Down Big Suspension
By Chris Pyo
This Dion Waiters edible situation remains difficult to parse, but it has finally delivered some tangible punishment. Less than 24 hours after word of Waiters' medical emergency in the skies emerged, the Heat announced they'll suspend him for 10 games.
Waiters hasn't played a single game for Miami this year, as he's lost favor with Erik Spoelstra and the organization after being suspended for the 2019 season opener for conduct detrimental to the team.
Following the suspension announcement, more information emerged about what transpired on the team plane, but Waiters is remaining mum on the exact details.
According to NBA insider Shams Charania, Waiters may have been given the gummy edible that triggered his supposed panic attack by a teammate. Of course, Waiters is hesitant to tell the franchise exactly which of his teammates gave it to him. At least he's staying loyal to his fellow players, even if he's brought the organization down with his recent actions.
Waiters has been in hot water with the Heat for a while now, and the fact that no other NBA team is willing to take him off the Heat's hands signals that perhaps the league perceives him as a liability these days.
With the emergence of youngsters including Kendrick Nunn and Tyler Herro, as well as the major addition of Jimmy Butler this past offseason, the Heat really don't need to keep Waiters on their roster any longer. They're set at shooting guard and small forward, and at this point, the Heat need to do their best to unload his contract somehow.
However, they're paying him $13 million per year until 2021, which in hindsight may very well be one of the worst contracts handed to a player in recent years.
Is it fair to label this situation Gummygate?
