Dodgers Acquire Right-Hander Casey Sadler From Tampa Bay for Fellow Righty Nathan Witt
By Parker White
On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Dodgers opted to bolster their pitching ranks. Casey Sadler is coming over from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for another right-handed hurler, Nathan Witt.
Los Angeles needed to make room on the 40-man roster for Sadler, so they moved veteran southpaw Rich Hill to the 60-day injured list. Hill has been out a couple weeks with a forearm strain that will keep him out until at least August.
Sadler, 28, has been an under-the-radar arm out of the Rays bullpen this year. In just nine appearances, he owns a 1.86 ERA with 11 strikeouts over 19.1 innings. Before being called up from Triple-A Durham, he made 11 appearances (three starts) and posted a 2.76 ERA with 44 strikeouts over 32.2 innings.
Sadler is known to be a ground ball machine, posting a 54.1% groundball rate in his short tenure with the big league club this year.
He's pitched in parts of four MLB seasons two different clubs, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, and in only 18 career big league appearances, he owns a 4.38 ERA with 26 strikeouts over 39 innings.
