Dodgers Completely Blew the Brian Dozier Trade With Twins
By Parker White
At the trade deadline last year, the Los Angeles Dodgers wanted to augment their infield depth, so they acquired former All-Star second baseman Brian Dozier from the Minnesota Twins for Logan Forsythe and a few minor leaguers.
Even though the Dodgers ended up winning the NL Pennant, Dozier didn't do much coming over to the National League, as he slashed .182/.300/.350 with five home runs and 20 RBI over 47 regular season games. He didn't fare better in October, either, as he was 2-for-16 with a pair of RBI in 11 postseason games.
Dozier ended up signing with the Washington Nationals this offseason, so it was a short-lived stint with the Dodgers. But hey, they made the playoffs and they didn't give up anyone of significance, right?
Nope. Los Angeles gave up a starting pitcher, Devin Smeltzer, who dominated the minor leagues and was just called up to make his big league debut.
Smeltzer is not just a cancer survivor and a great story. The 23-year-old southpaw can pitch, and in nine starts between Double-A and Triple-A, Smeltzer was 3-2 with a 1.15 ERA and had 48 strikeouts over 54.2 innings.
I know the Dodgers have more resources than any team and their minor league system is packed with big league talent, but they blew this Dozier trade by giving up what appears to be a major league starter.
Who knows what kind of pitcher Smeltzer will be, but it won't be hard to beat what Dozier provided for the Dodgers.
