Dodgers Decline Option on Veteran INF Jedd Gyorko
By Jerry Trotta
The Los Angeles Dodgers have a plethora of roster predicaments to address as we head into the offseason, and they got things started on Sunday by opting to part ways with a player they acquired ahead of the July 31 trade deadline.
The Dodgers have decided to decline Jedd Gyorko's $13 million team option for next season, making him a free agent by conjuring a $1 million buyout with the veteran infielder.
Gyorko was limited to just 62 games in 2019 between the Dodgers and Cardinals. He began the year on the 10-day injured list with a right calf strain. Later in the year he was separately shelved with a lower back strain and left calf strain.
After being dealt to Los Angeles, the 31-year-old utility infielder markedly underwhelmed, slashing a woeful .139/.205/.167 with just two RBI in 39 plate appearances (24 games).
As expected, that production ultimately saw him left off the Dodgers roster for the NLDS against the Nationals.
Despite his woes in 2019, we absolutely expect that Gyorko will have teams vying to sign him given his elite defensive versatility and ability to mash left-handed pitching -- he's a .267/.341/.455 career hitter against southpaws.
Gyorko simply didn't have a future in La La Land.
