Dodgers Reportedly Targeting Multiple Top Relievers in Free Agency
By Chris Russo
After missing out in their pursuit of Gerrit Cole, the Los Angeles Dodgers are remaining active in free agency.
The Dodgers are reportedly targeting multiple top relievers in their free agent search this winter as they look to improve their bullpen ahead of the 162-game grind.
After the Dodgers' relievers struggled in Game 5 of the NLDS, Los Angeles is looking at late inning arms, including Yankees fireballer Dellin Betances and former Oakland Athletics reliever Blake Treinen.
Despite ranking fourth in bullpen ERA in 2019, the Dodgers still feel there is room for improvement. Kenley Jansen wasn't his usual dominant self in 2019 and Joe Kelly's 4.56 ERA was cause for concern. Bringing in a top-tier setup arm could prove beneficial.
Betances only pitched two-thirds of an inning throughout the 2019 season due to multiple injuries, including a bone spur in his shoulder and a ruptured Achilles. Still, the right-hander boasts tremendous upside, highlighted by his MLB-record five consecutive seasons of 100+ strikeouts by a reliever.
Treinen had only 16 saves and a 4.91 ERA in 2019 in what was a down year for the 31-year-old. He recorded 38 saves while pitching to a minuscule 0.78 ERA as an All-Star in 2018.
Expect the Dodgers to continue to be at the forefront of 2019 free agency and don't be surprised if they make some notable additions to the bullpen while also managing snag a top-tier starter.
