Dolphins Announce Jim Caldwell Will Take Leave of Absence Due to Health Issues
By Sean Facey
A respected member of the football community and key figure on the Miami Dolphins' coaching staff is stepping away from the game for a bit.
The Dolphins announced Jim Caldwell will take a leave of absence to address his health issues.
Caldwell, 64, was set to be the assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach, but he's now expected to take on the role of a consultant. Jerry Schuplinski, one of the handful of coaches the Dolphins brought in from the New England Patriots in the offseason, will step up from his assistant coaching role to Caldwell's.
Caldwell is a tenured NFL coaching veteran. He's served as a quarterbacks coach for the Buccaneers, Colts and Ravens. He was also the head coach of the Detroit Lions from 2014 to 2017.
Over the course of his coaching career, he's overseen the development of quarterbacks like Peyton Manning and Matthew Stafford, leaving little doubt that he knows what he's doing when it comes to fostering growth out of his passers.
His absence will certainly force the Dolphins to re-adjust on the fly with training camp less than two weeks away.
That being said, his health obviously takes precedent over football. Hopefully he can tackle his medical issues head on.
