Don Shula Had a Ruthless Nickname for Bill Belichick That Every Patriots Hater Will Adore
By Michael Luciano
The sports world suffered a crushing loss when legendary head coach Don Shula, who led the Baltimore Colts and Miami Dolphins for 33 seasons and totaled a record 347 wins, passed away at the age of 90.
Shula was noted for, among many others distinctions, his constant desire to play the game clean and never bend the rules. This sense of integrity meant that Shula was no fan of New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, whom Shula coached against in 1995. Former Dolphins safety Dick Anderson confirmed that the squeaky-clean Shula actually called Belichick "Belicheat."
While "Belicheat" has continued to look for any advantage -- legal or illegal -- Shula remained a stand-up guy who famously refused to use a stolen Oakland Raiders gameplan before a 1975 game, as the story goes.
Shula not only racked up 347 wins, but he had just two losing seasons in 33 years as a head coach. Shula won two Super Bowls and appeared in six, using both power running attacks and a high-octane passing game to dominate consistently for three decades.
With the sad passing of the iconic Shula, the league lost not only one of the greatest coaches that ever lived, but one of the most unique personalities and sharpest wits that we have ever seen. You can bet that "Belicheat" will ring out when the Dolphins host New England down in Miami this season.
