This Dolphins-Redskins Trade for Trent Williams Could Actually Work
By Evan Wolff
With most of free agency already dried up, with the exception of a few key names, the attention once again turns to the trade market. Big names such as Stefon Diggs and DeAndre Hopkins have already been shipped off to their new destinations, but one name still remains at the top of the list for many teams.
Washington Redskins' offensive lineman Trent Williams still remains with the team as the two sides attempt to work out a solution. Whatever the case, he's likely to be moved this offseason after not playing a snap in 2019, and the Miami Dolphins should make a run at the veteran to bolster their offensive line.
The Dolphins have done an excellent job acquiring assets the last few seasons while also setting themselves up for future signings. That all came together over the last few weeks with Miami signing Byron Jones, Emmanuel Ogbah, Kyle Van Noy, and many other solid pieces with their endless cap space. However, they still have 14 picks in the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft, including three first-round picks and two second-round picks.
Miami could get this over with fairly easily by offering Washington their third-round pick (70th overall). Sure it might be a bit of a reach, but it's more than affordable considering the Dolphins have five picks in the first 56 selections. Perhaps they can get a two-year extension completed with Williams too so he doesn't leave immediately once his contract expires after the season.
That's where the desire to acquire a tackle with the talents of Trent Williams comes in. Miami's plentiful assets could easily land them Williams, and it might not even cost a first- or second-round given the Redskins have no leverage at this point. Now, with the Patriots dynasty all but officially over, this seems like a better time than ever to take advantage of a prime opportunity to try and build the best team in the division to compete with the Buffalo Bills.
It seems like a no-brainer for Dolphins GM Chris Grier to pull the trigger and acquire an All-Pro talent to bolster the offensive line.
