Dolphins Trading LB Kiko Alonso to Saints
By Michael Luciano
The continued, systematic destruction of the Miami Dolphins roster is still underway, as one of their defensive veterans has been shipped down to Louisiana.
Miami traded linebacker Kiko Alonso to the New Orleans Saints, who were looking for an upgrade over Demario Davis and Alex Anzalone inside.
Alonso had cleaned out his locker ahead of his expected trade or release, and now his move down to the Big Easy is official.
After being drafted by the Buffalo Bills and racking up 159 tackles in his rookie season, he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in the move that sent LeSean McCoy to Buffalo. After one injury-plagued year in Philly, he found himself in South Beach.
In three years as a Dolphin, Alonso topped 114 tackles in every season, with 125 tackles and three interceptions last year. Alonso was the force in the middle of a Miami defense that showed promise at times but lacked consistency.
Alonso was born to play inside in a 4-3 scheme like the one Dennis Allen uses in New Orleans. In this deal, a Super Bowl contender gets a starting linebacker while a tanking team gets more draft picks to stockpile. A true win-win.
