Domestic Assault Charge Dropped Against Phillies' Odubel Herrera
By Sean Facey
After over a month of anticipation, Odubel Herrera has cleared a major hurdle in clearing his name following in his domestic violence case.
The domestic assault charge against the Philadelphia Phillies outfielder has been dropped, clearing him of any possible punishment at the hands of the law. The news is obviously big for Philly.
Herrera was arrested back in late May after police responded to a report of domestic violence at the Golden Nugget hotel in Atlantic City.
The former All-Star is still on paid administrative leave and has been since the incident. He has not played in a game since May 26.
Though his girlfriend has chosen not to press charges, the MLB is still expected to continue conducting its own investigation into the matter. Whether or not he'll face disciplinary action remains to be seen.
Similar cases in the past have still yielded suspensions for players despite a lack of legal action.
The Phillies could have a tough decision ahead of them if the 27-year-old player were to end up suspended. Releasing him would only create a financial burden as he's owed $23.7 million through 2021.
His standing with both the league and the team will certainly be something to keep an eye on as the season progresses and the Phillies try to claw their way back into the race for the NL East crown.
