The Philadelphia Eagles stunned NFL Draft viewers on Friday night when it was revealed that they used the No. 53 overall pick on Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts. While the team was in need of a competent backup gunslinger, it was expected that GM Howie Roseman would address the issue later in the offseason.
Carson Wentz's health is far from a sure thing, but it seemed like the wiser choice would have been to fill other holes on the roster.
However, one Eagles legend isn't of that mindset. Former star quarterback Donovan McNabb is wholly on board with the selection of Hurts.
“If you continuously get hurt, they're going to look to bring somebody in to step in...Carson is one of the top QBs in the league, when he's healthy. But he just hasn't been healthy, over the last couple years, to finish seasons out”

After offering up some thoughts on Hurt's fit in head coach Doug Pederson's system, McNabb unleashed an eye-opening take on Wentz's concerning injury history and how that factored into this draft pick.
"Wentz just turned 27," said the former six-time Pro Bowler. "The Eagles guaranteed him over $100 MILLION just 10 months ago. You don’t draft a quarterback in the second round when you have a $100 million quarterback just reaching his prime unless you have grave doubts about his ability to stay healthy. Unless you seriously doubt his ability to navigate his way through a football season, from opening day through the final snap of the postseason."
That pretty much sums up the feelings of most of Eagles Nation. As much as they would've loved to see Roseman draft a linebacker or cornerback, Hurts will bring immense value to the team.

At least with Hurts you have the confidence that he'd be able to right the ship if Wentz were to go down. With all due respect, players like Nate Sudfeld and Kyle Lauletta wouldn't enjoy much success under center with the Eagles' first team.
That's just the reality of things in the City of Brotherly Love, and Roseman, as McNabb notes, deserves some credit for not hiding from it.
