Dontrelle Willis Teases Baseball Return and Hints at Playing in Australia
By Karl Rasmussen
Dontrelle Willis was one of baseball's most electric pitchers during his prime, albeit short lived. The former All-Star hasn't pitched in the pros since 2011, but almost a decade later it looks like he's mulling a return.
It won't be to the MLB, that train has left the station for the 38-year-old. Instead, Willis took to Twitter and teased a possible attempt at a run in the Australian Baseball League.
The D-Train emerged in 2003 as a stud rookie for the Marlins, racking up 14 wins and sustaining a 3.30 ERA across 27 starts in his debut campaign. His best year came in 2005 when he finished second in NL Cy Young voting after going 22-10 with a sterling 2.63 ERA and 170 strikeouts.
His career petered out from there, however, as he never regained his All-Star form. He joined the Tigers in 2008 and pitched to an abysmal 6.86 ERA across 22 starts. He eventually found himself in Arizona and Cincinnati for brief stints before his major league career concluded.
It seems D-Train already has some suitors Down Under. Perhaps the 38-year-old can make this dream a reality and get back on a professional mound.
