When first reading the reports that Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving was opposed to the terms of the resumption of the 2019-20 NBA season, many believed he was just doing it to be "a disruptor." However, he had a good reason to be skeptical, as he believes that playing out the season will distract the nation from fighting for social reform.

Even with this clarification, some observers still don't get it, like Fox Sports' Doug Gottlieb. Upon seeing Irving's quote about surrendering everything to fight for change, the controversial sports media figure tweeted out that former NFL player Pat Tillman, who died serving in the Army in Afghanistan, "gave up everything."

Gottlieb didn't just stop there. He stressed that he respects Irving as a basketball player and expressed his belief that the NBA's Walt Disney World plan is a "terrible idea." But, he flips the script to say that Irving's stance is "so bizarre."

This is just ridiculous. Tillman turned down a contract from the Arizona Cardinals to fight for the United States after the September 11th attacks. He served for two years before succumbing to friendly fire at the young age of 27 in 2004.

So, Gottlieb uses the life of Tillman to express his opinion that Irving won't actually step away from the game of basketball for the sake of social reform? Come on.

This is just a case of Gottlieb trying to fan the flames of controversy, which is something he's made a career out of. It still doesn't take away from how truly distasteful his comments were, especially during this period of national unrest.
