Dramatic Saints Win Proves They're Contenders Despite Still Being Cursed by Refs
By Michael Luciano
Despite the best wishes and intentions of the NFL referees, the New Orleans Saints continue to win football games. After it looked like all hope was lost when Deshaun Watson hit Kenny Stills on a beautiful throw deep downfield to score with 37 seconds to go, Drew Brees rallied the troops and put together a quick drive of his own, capped off by a Wil Lutz 58-yard field goal that sunk the Houston Texans 30-28 in the Saints' home opener.
We knew that Sean Payton's offense, led by Brees, Alvin Kamara, and Michael Thomas, was going to be explosive, but the Saints ultimately proved that they're built to contend by answering their two biggest questions.
The interior of the offensive line, which was hurt by the retirement of Max Unger, looked great, as rookie Erik McCoy led a group that kept Brees off the SuperDome turf all night.
The loss of Sheldon Rankins and suspension of David Onyemata was supposed to hamper their interior pass rush, but Cameron Jordan and the rest of the defensive line put Watson on his back six times and forced countless more pressures.
They still have to clean up a few things, as they need to fix some of the gaping holes in their secondary and find a way to make peace with that voodoo priestess who put some sort of hex on them to have have the worst luck with officiating in the history of football, but the 2019 Saints have all the hallmarks of a team ready to take home a Lombardi.
