If you're a baseball fan, this news is sad to hear. If you're a member of Red Sox Nation, it's absolutely demoralizing.

Dustin Pedroia, whose chronic injury woes have put his chances of returning to the diamond increasingly in doubt, is stepping away from the Red Sox indefinitely.

While it has not been reported that the second baseman and former AL MVP has made any decisions yet about whether or not to retire, he's going to head to Arizona to be with his wife and children.

"[I]t’s very important for [Pedroia and his family] to spend time together and for him to disconnect himself a little bit," Boston manager Alex Cora said. The skipper added that there is no set timeline for Pedroia reuniting with the team.

Currently on the 60-day DL with knee issues, the Laser Show being forced to bow out like this would be anticlimactic to say the very least. He's in his age 36 season, but nobody wants to see a multiple-time World Series champ go out on anything other than his own terms.
