Eagles and Vikings Should Pursue John DeFilippo Reunions After Jaguars Dismissed Him
By Scott Rogust
While the Jacksonville Jaguars retained head coach Doug Marrone and general manager David Caldwell, not every member of the coaching staff will be back for the 2020 season.
The Jaguars mutually parted ways with offensive coordinator John DeFilippo after one year, despite his work in developing rookie quarterback Gardner Minshew.
With DeFilippo now on the market, there are two teams that need to make a push for the offensive-minded coach. And yes, we're talking about his former employers in the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings, considering both have vacancies at offensive coordinator.
DeFilippo was (at least partially) responsible for Philadelphia's offensive success in the 2017 season. Carson Wentz had an MVP-caliber season that year and looked completely unstoppable until he injured his knee. Wentz going down ended up being a non-issue for the Eagles, as they called upon Nick Foles, who had the most dominant playoff run in NFL history en route to their Super Bowl LII win. DeFilippo deserves a lot of credit for that.
As for the Vikings, they have an opening at OC due to Kevin Stefanski taking the Cleveland Browns head coaching job. While DeFilippo's stint in Minneapolis was an unmitigated disaster, there needs to be some semblance of familiarity in the playbook heading into next season.
DeFilippo's work with Leonard Fournette in Jacksonville should entice the Vikings to bring him back, considering star RB Dalvin Cook remains the focal point of their offensive identity.
The esteemed offensive coordinator will have plenty of offers from NFL teams, but the Eagles and Vikings represent obvious fits for the 41-year-old, due to his past ties and their vacancies at the position.
