Eagles Are Going to Break Porcelain QB Carson Wentz if They Aren't Careful
By Scott Rogust
The Philadelphia Eagles chose Carson Wentz over Nick Foles this offseason, and rewarded the former second-overall pick with a four-year, $128 million contract extension. Some fans were wary of the decision, and Sunday night didn't exactly ease those concerns.
Priro to halftime of the Eagles game against the Atlanta Falcons, Wentz left the game with an apparent injury, allowing veteran Josh McCown to enter in relief.
For the better part of the first half, Wentz was pulverized by the Falcons defense. On one play in particular, the fourth-year signal caller took a shot to the ribs by linebacker Deion Jones on a pass attempt, resulting in an interception.
Wentz went to the sidelines to get checked out in the NFL medical tent in the final two minutes of the half. After a couple of snaps for McCown, Wentz exited the tent and pleaded to go back onto the field with a little over ten second remaining. And that's what happened, leaving many scratching their heads at the decision.
Wentz was 6-for-16 for 47 yards and two interceptions at the end of the first half. A lot of the punishment Wentz has been facing by Atlanta is due to the amount of injuries surrounding him. His receiving targets in DeSean Jackson, Alshon Jeffery, Dallas Goedert, and Nelson Agholor were all banged up.
Not to mention center Jason Kelce left briefly with concussion-like symptoms, before returning to the game.
Wentz doesn't have the greatest durability, as evidenced by his torn knee and back injury in the past two seasons. With go-to targets and key offensive linemen hurting, the Philadelphia Eagles' investment will be all for naught if Wentz continues to be placed in dangerous situations like he has in Week 2.
