This Eagles-Chargers Trade for Keenan Allen Would Make Philly Instant Super Bowl Contenders

it's no secret that the Philadelphia Eagles need help at the wide receiver position, and so far this offseason, they haven't done much to address it. Considering the Dallas Cowboys look pretty strong on paper, the NFC East still runs through Philly. That means they have to make a big splash to take their passing attack to new heights.

All top-tier free agents at the position are signed, and the top options in this year's draft class will be gone before the Eagles are on the clock with the 21st overall pick. So, why not try to get a receiver off the trading block? How about Keenan Allen from the Los Angeles Chargers?

Allen is set to become a free agent after this season, along with Joey Bosa, Melvin Ingram, Hunter Henry, and Mike Williams (sans fifth-year option). Even though the Chargers will have $128 million in cap space next offseason, there's only so much money to go around, and Allen would likely prefer to go to a contending team that will hand him a lucrative contract.

Instead of allowing the receiver to hit the open market, why not get something in return for him? We're thinking that the Eagles could send their 2020 second-round pick and defensive end Derek Barnett (in a similar contract situation to Williams) to the Chargers in exchange for Allen and a 2020 fifth-round pick.

The Chargers can use their second-round pick to take a receiver and get a young defensive end in Barnett, who could benefit from a change of scenery, not to mention Barnett could be a fallback option if Bosa signs elsewhere in 2021.

As for the Eagles, quarterback Carson Wentz gets a big play machine in Allen to play alongside Alshon Jeffery and DeSean Jackson. Even if Philadelphia can't re-sign Allen due to their hellish cap situation in 2021, it won't matter if they make it to the Super Bowl. It's a risk worth taking.
