The Eagles Are Truly High if They Think They'll Be Able to Sign Jadeveon Clowney at Reported Desired Price
By Jerry Trotta
After striving to reset the market for defensive linemen entering the offseason, Jadeveon Clowney, who spent the 2019 season with the Seattle Seahawks, remains an unrestricted free agent. The three-time Pro Bowler originally demanded a $20 million annual salary, and it's now fair to say that won't receive anything close to that desired sum.
The Philadelphia Eagles, who were one of the teams said to be pursuing Clowney, are still reportedly interested, but would only consider signing the 27-year-old stud for $10 million (or less) per year.
What on earth is Philly smoking? There's no denying that Clowney's stock has dropped, but we're still talking about one of the best pass rushers in the NFL. Not in this lifetime would the former No. 1 overall pick sign a deal for $10 million. At this stage, it's largely expected that he will ink a one-year contract worth somewhere around $15 million, at LEAST.
The Eagles' desired price is an insult to Clowney and his craft. Over the last four seasons, the South Carolina product has registered 189 tackles, 27.5 sacks, 67 quarterback hits, and 8 forced fumbles. All told, those numbers don't fully justify the havoc he wreaks up front. He's double teamed on just about every play.
This has been all about money from the start for Clowney. Philadelphia thinking that he would consider taking a $10 million annual max salary to play for a team that might not even be the best in its division is laughable.
