Eagles Rumored to Have Offered a Contract to Jadeveon Clowney
By Jerry Trotta
The Philadelphia Eagles might be right up against the salary cap, but that isn't stopping general manager Howie Roseman from swinging for the fences.
According to the latest buzz, the Eagles have submitted a contract offer to Jadeveon Clowney, who remained a free agent entering the weekend.
What makes this rumor so surprising is that defensive line is the last area that Philadelphia needs to address. The team already has Fletcher Cox, Brandon Graham, Malik Jackson, Derek Barnett, and free agent signee Javon Hargrave up front. However, if the Eagles feel that Clowney's price tag has dropped enough to where they could afford him on a one-year deal, then why not get richer?
This update is also a tad controversial in that Clowney laid a vicious hit on quarterback Carson Wentz in the NFC Wild Card Round back in January, which knocked the latter out of the game with a concussion.
Amid the Eagles' reported interest in Clowney, Wentz recently acknowledged that he would be open to the franchise signing the the three-time Pro Bowler.
This development doesn't tab Philadelphia as the favorites to land Clowney, but the team should be considered serious players in the sweepstakes. That alone should excite fans in the City of Brotherly Love, as the former No. 1 overall pick is far and away the best free agent available at this stage of the offseason.
