Eagles Wasting 2nd-Round Pick on Jalen Hurts to Possibly Make Him 3rd-String QB in 2020 is Pathetic
By Michael Luciano
Using the 53rd overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft on Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts despite the presence of Carson Wentz was a puzzling enough move from Howie Roseman and the Philadelphia Eagles, but refusing to give Hurts a good chunk of plays as a rookie will make the selection look even worse.
Head coach Doug Pederson implied that Hurts might actually start off the year as the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart, citing his need to learn the Eagles' complex playbook.
Nate Sudfeld, a former sixth-rounder out of Indiana who has been with the Eagles for the last three seasons, would be the backup behind Wentz. Sudfeld had completed 20 of his 25 career passes for 156 yards and a touchdown.
Sticking Hurts as the inactive tertiary signal caller might also show that the Eagles aren't seriously considering using him like how the New Orleans Saints used wide receiver/running back Taysom Hill. How exactly is Hurts going to play this year?
The Eagles took one of the most athletically gifted quarterbacks in this year's draft when they brought in Hurts, but they appear to be going out of their way to use him improperly and deprive him of getting ample experience his rookie season. Sticking him as the No. 3 QB makes the pick look infinitely worse than it did in the immediate aftermath.
