The Eagles Didn't Trade for Jalen Ramsey Because They Aren't Good Enough Right Now | TOMMY'S TAKES
By Thomas Carannante
Philadelphia Eagles fans, are you still upset your team didn't trade for Jalen Ramsey? I'd definitely be feeling a bit down after watching him go to another NFC contender, but Philly was actually acting in a prudent manner by holding off on this.
Why? Because the Eagles just aren't that good in 2019.
Keeping an open line of dialogue is what any good general manager is supposed to do, and Howie Roseman, one of the best in the game, did just that. But he certainly was not going to make a splash for a guy like Ramsey, who's been known to cause problems, at such a prohibitive cost. For all the Eagles fans still sour about this, just remember Roseman will probably get his hands on two franchise-caliber players with those two first-round picks the Eagles didn't give up. Since 2016, Roseman has selected Carson Wentz, Derek Barnett, Dallas Goedert and Andre Dillard with the first selection in each of the last four drafts, all of whom figure to be a key part of this team's future.
Ramsey is only signed through 2020. Does this season feel like a Super Bowl season with all these injuries and inconsistencies? Is this the right gamble?
All in all, the Eagles just don't seem to have it this year, and chasing a mercurial player like Ramsey at a high cost is the wrong move at the moment. This Philly team has wins over the putrid Jets and Redskins. Their lone win over the Packers, though impressive, was gifted to them, and their losses have come at the hands of the Falcons, Lions and Vikings (an embarrassing one).
Something is up with this team. It's not the same old ferocious Eagles squad. Injuries have decimated the roster, the defense can't stop a nosebleed, the receivers can't catch, and the offense can't seem to come through in the clutch despite Wentz's under-the-radar impressive play thus far.
You don't push the envelope to make a blockbuster move when the writing is on the wall. The Eagles might get back on track as the season progresses, but right now this isn't a playoff team and it's likely Roseman sees that. Tossing away two first-rounders for 1.5 seasons of Jalen Ramsey when both the offense and defense are struggling mightily is not the solution. All it would take is for you to lose to the Cowboys and Bills and you'd be getting an earful from the new acquisition.
The Eagles have time to turn it around, but at the moment this team has a lot to work on and further develop. Focusing on that will be the key, not acquiring a hot-headed star player.
