Howie Roseman Finally Breaks Silence on Eagles-Malcolm Jenkins Divorce
By Brady Williams
One of the more surprising moves this NFL offseason was the Philadelphia Eagles' decision to cut ties with their longtime safety Malcom Jenkins. After six seasons with the Eagles, Jenkins reportedly wanted a raise and a one-year extension, but Philly wasn't willing to make it happen. It's a decision that's received a lot of criticism from fans.
On Thursday, general manager Howie Roseman finally gave some justification for the team's decision.
Despite not missing a single game in his time with the Eagles, the three-time Pro-Bowler is 32 years old and it's not a guarantee that he'll be around much longer. Spending more than the $7.6 million Jenkins was due to receive this year was apparently not worth it for Roseman given the veteran's age.
He's been a workhorse and a star regardless of his age, so why in the world was that an issue at this point?
Nonetheless, Jenkins was able to find a team that was willing to pay him. He agreed to a four-year, $32 million contract to return to the New Orleans Saints, the team that drafted him, and he'll get $16.25 million guaranteed in the deal.
To cope with the move, the Eagles are moving Jalen Mills to safety and signed cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman to slide into the slot. Roseman better hope this works or else Eagles fans' yells will grow louder regarding Jenkins' departure.
