Eagles Owner Says Giving Chip Kelly Overwhelming Power Was One of His Biggest Regrets Ever

Super Bowl LII washed away almost all of Eagles fans' memories of the brutal Chip Kelly era, but team owner Jeffrey Lurie admitted in an interview with The Athletic that he made one notable mistake when bringing the former Philly head coach aboard.

After two decent seasons as head coach, the Eagles gave Kelly full control of the 53-man roster in 2015, relegating GM Howie Roseman to mostly scouting duties. At the end of the 2015 season, Kelly was fired, having done significant damage to the team's roster.

In just a short period of time with control of the roster, Kelly gave up Nick Foles, a second-rounder and a fourth-rounder for SAM BRADFORD, released DeSean Jackson, traded LeSean McCoy, and let Jeremy Maclin leave in free agency. It was a truly remarkable display of ineptitude.

His coaching was not impressive that year, either. Maybe personnel duties added too much responsibility for him to focus on coaching, or maybe he simply wasn't a fit for the NFL. Either way, the Chip Kelly experiment was a failed one.

Luckily, a Super Bowl victory can heal just about any football-related regrets. With Howie Roseman and Doug Pederson, the Eagles believe they have found their GM-coach tandem for a long time, and the Chip Kelly era feels like a lifetime ago.
