This Eagles-Patriots Trade for Julian Edelman Would Be Perfect Deal for Philly to Help Develop Newly Drafted WR
By Thomas Carannante
The New England Patriots have officially been dismantled. There are a few remaining pieces on the team that could make them quasi-contenders in 2020, but it's time that Bill Belichick embraces the full rebuild and begins the process with the 2020 draft.
Next up on the docket? Trading wide receiver Julian Edelman, considering he provides little use over the next two seasons, especially with cap hits of $9.6 million and $6.6 million. Give the Philadelphia Eagles a call and get some draft capital for the veteran wideout.
The Eagles are in need of ANY receiver, and Edelman's championship pedigree and incredible reliability in the slot will do wonders for Carson Wentz, who hasn't had a fully healthy cast of pass catchers in quite a while.
We presume Edelman could be had for a third- or fourth-round pick, which we can expect the Eagles to gladly surrender (on top of drafting a wide receiver in the first round) to bring this passing game back to life. Philly limped into the playoffs last year with a largely inconsistent offense. Imagine if they can group Edelman, DeSean Jackson and a top talent in the first round? That will change every defensive game plan beginning Week 1.
We're sure Belichick would love to move Edelman to the NFC, too, which was just the case with Rob Gronkowski. The 33-year-old receiver is arguably coming off his best season in the NFL after serving as the Patriots' No. 1 target in 2019. Surround him with some playmakers in Philly and it'll open up the field for the former Kent State star.
Many can safely say the Eagles' Super Bowl window is probably wide open for the next couple of years, so this pairing is a much-needed match to improve those hopes for Philly.
