Eagles Release RB Wendell Smallwood as Backfield Tightens on Cut Day
By Sean Facey
The Eagles knew they were going to have to make a tough decision at running back on cutdown day. There was simply too much talent and not enough roster space to carry everyone.
The unfortunate member of Philadelphia's stacked backfield who ultimately ended up getting cut was running back Wendell Smallwood.
With Jordan Howard, Darren Sproles, Corey Clement and Miles Sanders all ahead of him on the depth chart, Smallwood simply found himself on the outside looking in.
It's unfortunate that he had to go, especially considering he was such a productive member of that backfield. He appeared in 37 games from 2016 to 2018 for the Eagles, totaling 1,238 yards from scrimmage on a respectable 4.8 yards per touch.
He also contributed in the return game; Smallwood returned 15 kicks for the Eagles during his time with the team, even taking one back for a touchdown in his rookie season.
Though his time in Philadelphia came to an unfortunate end due to circumstances out of his control, it seems like a given that there will be at least a handful of teams ready and willing to give him a shot.
He could still prove to be an explosive backup at the NFL level.
