Eagles Relying on JJ Arcega-Whiteside to Fill Need at WR Isn't Good Enough
By Scott Rogust
If the 2019 season proved anything, it's that the Philadelphia Eagles are in desperate need for an overhaul at the wide receiver position. We all got a glimpse of that once the Eagles lost Alshon Jeffery, DeSean Jackson, and Nelson Agholor to injuries, forcing them to push rookie JJ Arcega-Whiteside into the spotlight earlier than many anticipated. And he didn't impress.
Now with Agholor gone and Jeffery and D-Jax aging, the Eagles have placed their total faith in Arcega-Whiteside to fill their need at wide receiver, which is a very bad decision.
Instead of addressing the wideout position in free agency, general manager Howie Roseman stayed pat with his current roster. Even though Roseman stressed that Arcega-Whiteside dealt with a lower body injury last season, he laid down the gauntlet, saying the young receiver "needs to make a big jump" in 2020.
Injury or not, Arcega-Whiteside failed to show the explosiveness he had during his four years at Stanford. The 2019 second-round pick only caught 10-of-23 targets for 169 yards and a touchdown at the start of his career in Philadelphia. Hell, even practice squad receiver Greg Ward Jr. outperformed Arcega-Whiteside, who was touted as one of the best receivers in the 2019 draft class.
In comparison, just look at the numbers he put up in his senior season at college: 63 catches for 1,059 yards and 14 scores. What happened?
Let's be honest, this is all talk from Roseman. The Eagles are in prime position to select a top wideout in the first round of the upcoming NFL Draft. They're going to take one, and slot them above Arcega-Whiteside on the depth chart.
Placing your faith in an unproductive receiver just isn't feasible, especially on a team that has playoff aspirations like the Eagles.
