Eagles Reportedly Bring QB Josh McCown Out of Retirement and Sign Him to 1-Year Deal
By Jerry Trotta
You know where we stood on the Philadelphia Eagles' current quarterback debacle: the franchise needed to address it as soon as possible.
Well, it would appear that Philly did just that.
Per ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the Eagles have signed NFL journeyman Josh McCown out of retirement to back-up the the injury-prone Carson Wentz. The 40-year-old vet will sign a one-year deal with the organization and plans to re-join ESPN in the broadcasting booth after this season.
Honestly, what a get by general manager Howie Roseman. We'd be hard-pressed to find a better QB than McCown on the actual NFL market. What better way to combat that issue than convince a former gunslinger to come out of retirement?
The bottom-line is that the Eagles needed to do something. Surefire back-up Nate Sudfield went on the shelf with a broken wrist last week and Cody Kessler suffered a concussion during Thursday night's preseason game against the Jaguars. That left the uninspiring Clayton Thorson next up on the depth chart to back-up Wentz.
In McCown's latest full season in the league -- 2017 with the Jets -- he logged 18 touchdowns compared to 9 interceptions and threw for 2,926 yards while completing over 67% of his passes.
Again, what a get for the green birds.
