The Philadelphia Eagles' offense struggled throughout the 2019 season, even when they were at full health. After their Wild Card Round exit at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks, the team opted to part ways with offensive coordinator Mike Groh.

Many were speculating about who would replace Groh, but the Eagles went a different route than most anticipated.

According to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Eagles won't hire an offensive coordinator. Instead, they will have a combination of run and pass game coordinators and other offensive assistants.

While the structure sounds weird, it's not uncommon in the NFL.

The San Francisco 49ers, who made it to Super Bowl LIV, didn't have an offensive coordinator. Instead, they had Mike LaFleur as pass game coordinator and Mike McDaniel as run game coordinator, with head coach Kyle Shanahan calling offensive plays.

Philadelphia is opting to go that same route, with head coach Doug Pederson running the offense.

Shortly before this news broke, the Eagles announced they added the title of pass game coordinator to quarterbacks coach Press Taylor's mantle. Philadelphia is also expected to hire former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello to an unknown role on the coaching staff.

Additionally, assistant head coach Duce Staley and offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland will be in charge of the running game in 2020.

This offensive structure worked for the 49ers for the better part of this past season. It will remain to be seen if the Eagles can successfully replicate it.
